![]() ![]() WIKIpedia definition: What is RTTY radio? RTTY Radio TeleTYpe (Also known as Baudot or ITA2) uses the Baudot 5-bit alphabet with FSK Frequency-Shift Keying to send text messages over the shortwave. When I think of all those tapes I held onto for years but then somewhere along the way I tossed them.makes me sick.RTTY using a computer, Purists like K6YIC use mechanical teletype machines in this mode Of the images I have found on the internet, nothing is to the exact scale as what comes off the machine and I have struggled to match up the halves (see photos below). To make it more complicated, often a top and bottom line (before and after the image) was added to line up with a second (or even third) sheet to hang up side by side to complete the image. Problem: Imagine if you will, the paper roll in the machine could be endless. Only by googling RTTY ART followed by my callsign WA3OHN.or my dad's callsign K3YUH (I made many for him to originate from his radio shack as his own).was I able to find a handful of those works. Then for each character sent a possible combination of toggled 2 tones based on the potential of 5 holes per character on the tape was sent.for each character. ![]() The signal amounted to a simple TWO-TONE transmission. Understand each recipient has their own teletype machine tuned into my signal prepared to copy. When a new picture was being sent for the first time often there were many ham radio operators also tuned in and copying. Next, I would contact Dad on the ham radio and we would set up to SEND him the picture over the airwaves via RTTY. ![]() without a single mistake (if lucky) I then had a ticker-tape ROLL to be played back at full speed into a teletype machine thus reproducing the full image. "W's" with one row of "M's" to make a much darker shaded area. Often a Carriage Return was only a "return" without advancing down a row in order to type over one row of. After hours of this, upon completion, I would sit at a tape punch/teletype keyboard and letter by letter punch in every square on the graph paper. I would then fill the squares on the paper with various alphabet characters to replicate darker or lighter areas. After finding a picture of something I would sit at my drawing board (a huge 4 x 8 plywood set up like an easel) on which I taped multiple sheets of graph paper. Forty years have gone by and I have long ago lost all the ticker tapes of the 30 plus artworks I did, and only because a very few of them have been preserved on the internet, I discovered five of the ones I spent endless all-nighters in the basement. Barb (and the kids) put up with a lot for sure. I made massive train layouts Set up a ham radio shack with huge antennas on the roof, and even created RTTY ART using old Teletype machines. In the early 80's while married to my first wife, I found myself pursuing so many hobbies in the basement. ![]()
